10/23/2007 3:28:31 PM | My condolences to the Hartsell family..Sifu Hartsell was and will always be one of a kind. I have always treasured meeting Sifu in 1988 at Princton Academy and then training with him at my own, ICAT Academy. I owe alot to him for the many "variables" as he called them that have helped keep me alive in my correctional career. We had many commonalities other than martial arts, we were both Veterens in the United States Army and Law Enforcement Officers just to mention a few. Sifu Hartsell you embodied a spirit that I will miss greatly. I loved you as a teacher, as a brother, and as a giant among men. "Forever your Student" in JKD Grappling. God Bless you and keep you amongst all the true warriors of God.

9/29/2007 5:23:42 PM | My first JKD instructor-Lee Foster, was a Larry Hartsell student. Larry opened a school for a small time in Charlotte NC, off of Comonwealth blvd called "Golden Dragon Kung Fu", after Bruce Lee died--Lee (Foster) talked about him alot and I have always kept him in mind while working certain grappling attributed to him. A big loss to the JKD and FMA world, and we here at Makoa Combatives Group in Oregon still use what Larry brought. Our condolences to his Family, and the JKD family

8/28/2007 12:07:16 PM | I am very sadden today from hearing of the passing of a truely fine man, fellow veteran, and respected martial artist. I first met and trained with Mr Hartell, back in the mid 70"s while stationed at Ft Bragg, NC. The training was in Charlotte, NC. In the early 90"s, While living in Maryland I joined a teacher, Tom Clark, who again introduced me to Larry and his JKD Grappling seminars. Larry was a humble man who expressed his great knowledge of the JKD arts and grappling arts to those of us willing to learn. May he find peace. And may God bless his family and friends and all that truely knew him. Ron Spears(Texas)

8/26/2007 7:11:36 PM | Sifu Larry has been my teacher, friend, and mentor for almost 30 years. Not sure which I will miss more, the long walks along the Marina or the thunderous body shots I was on the receiving end durring a number of sparring sessions. Either way, we definatly has some "times". I still have a folding paper cup he drank water from durring the first seminar he taught in Chicago in 1980. I"ll never forget the look on his face when I showed it to him some 20 years later. Sifu will always remain in my heart.

8/24/2007 12:48:33 PM | It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Sifu Hartsell yesterday. For many years I had the honor and pleasure of training with Sifu Hartsell here in Baltimore, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Michigan. He was a true giant in the Martial Arts, a gentle giant at that. His knowledge and skills were enormous matched in scale only by his humility and friendliness. Sifu Larry connected on a very real personal level with each and every student he taught. It is with great sadness that with his passing I now recall all the wonderful training sessions and conversations with Sifu Hartsell. He will be sorely missed.

8/24/2007 2:38:40 AM | I only had the chance to train with Larry on a few occasions but he and his students have had a lasting impact on my outlook to life and martial arts. My deepest respect and sympathy goes out to Debra and all of Larry"s family, fiends and students.
If a person can be half as much a gentleman and martial artist as Larry then they will have achieved something great.
I wish I had trained with Larry 20 years ago but I am truely lucky that he has touched my life.
Walk on, from all at the Moi Fa Academy.

8/24/2007 12:26:05 AM | I"ve known Larry for over 20 years; my wife Diana, since the day she was born. I got to spend countless hours with him when we were roommates. My wife and I are saddened by his death. Larry was a great person who tried to stay away from politics. He was a no-nonsense guy in the martial arts world. He was the "real deal" who could hold his own against anyone. He was "tough-as-nails" and yet, he was a gentleman who never flexed his ego in the martial arts world. He would rather train than complain. His example served as an amazing lesson for me. His Spirit and memory will live on in the JKD world. Diana and I send our condolenses to Debra, freinds and famliy.

8/23/2007 10:02:40 AM | I had the privilege of knowing Sifu Hartsell for over 20 years. During my first week of JKD classes, I remember Sifu Paul Vunak telling us how his teacher, Larry Hartsell was one of the few people that he would never, ever, ever want to meet in a dark alley! He encouraged us to seek him out, so we did. When I did meet Sifu Hartsell, I was probably scared to death of him but he turned out to be so soft spoken and almost gentle (except that every pak sao left a red handprint)!
*Sifu Hartsell, words cannot convey the loss that sweeps across our community like a tsunami. You have made a very big splash in our little pond and those ripples will be felt for generations to come. Your contributions to the perpetuation and evolution of Jeet Kune Do Concepts will never be forgotten. So much more than a teacher, you were a part of our family and we miss you very much.
I truly believe that the journey for Sifu Hartsell hasnt ended at all, but only just begun anew in another realm.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Body and Spirit I surrendered whole
To harsh Instructors - and received a soul . . .

8/22/2007 11:12:13 AM | I have been with him for 20 years starting back in the 80"s with seminars and training camps. Since then he has become much more than just a teacher to me...he has become a good friend as well. I remember back in those days when there was controversy between the various JKD camps, he said to me, "learn from everyone to see what works for you as an individual and ignore all the debating going on!" That is humble philosophy coming from a very humble personality.
He has been coming to the Practical Self Defense Training Center in CT since 1990. He was supposed to be here again September 8th...we will all miss him this year and every year to come.
This death hurts a lot but his memory, his friendship and all he has taught me lives on for the rest of my life!

On my first meeting with Larry at the Degerberg Academy in Chicago, Larry sat down and talked with me for hours about his training with Bruce, his friendship with the late James Lee, and answered any question I had about JKD. Larry was also very interested in my art (Serrada Eskrima) and questioned me at length (even taking notes!) about our training methods. He was the quintessential combination of talent and humility, and we will all miss him dearly. We would all do well to emulate the model of warrior, gentleman, and human being that Larry lived. 8/21/2007 8:44:44 PM | My heart goes out to the family of Master Hartsell.
He must be in a great place; believe...
JKD was a major part of developing my skills and schoolsystem "Kime Ryu". Reading Bruce Lee"s books allowed me to open doors to passages I would never want to go before.
As a fellow Judoman and grappler, and having seen Bruce put his M.M.A. theories into action on screen, I can only leave it to all our" imagination, of how wonderfull it must have been to be able to have shared that with "the man" himself.
To be able to have done what Master Hartsell has done with the work of an Idol to most of us serious masters, who are still teaching, is an inspiration to us all. We only hope to make a small part of that diffence.
"Sifu: please send our regards to your friend and teacher; although we have never met I will miss you both".

F.D.Nick Braaksma

8/21/2007 8:43:53 PM | Mr. Larry Hartsell set me on the right path in the MA & JKD in Charlotte, North Carolina back in 1970 when I received private training from him, plus I build and installed his training equipment at the Charlotte, NC location. Over the years we would stay in contact and talk about how it used to be back in the 1970`s and 1980`s. We all will miss him. He was a person you could talk to one on one about anything and was all was willing to help you any way he could. I have several e mails and fax`s from Mr. Hartsell dated last year where he was going to help me out in a new book I am in the process of writing. My sympathies to his wife and family.

He was a true pioneer for the grappling arts. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to His wife Deborah and to my Guro Inosanto and Ajarn Chai who have lost their dear friend and "brother". May JAH guide and protect him and welcome him into heaven.

8/21/2007 7:13:54 PM | The word is rippling across my organization and we are also shocked and saddened by the passing of a great person. I had the honor of training with Sifu Hartsell numerous times back in the middle to late eighties and was always impressed with his down to earth nature, his humor and ready smile and of course his deep knowledge and rough and tumble ways. Sifu Hartsell is a distinct influence on our art of Sikal.
He will be sorely missed by all, yet he leaves a strong legacy in shared knowledge, great stories and memories for us all. Peace to you brother and deepest condolences to all.

His pioneering spirit and efforts have changed the martial arts world for the better. God bless him and his family. 8/21/2007 4:02:51 PM | Another valuable assett to the martial arts community has gone and the impact of his presence will be felt for a long time to come. Some of my Iss-Hogai jujitsu is based on what he taught and, of course, what Patrick Strong and Bruce Lee, himself, taught. I think the martial arts community will be much sadder for the passing of a true pioneer.

Part 4/6 - Dan Inosanto and Diana Lee Inosanto Interview
Steve McQueen wrote Guru Dan a letter years after Bruce Lee died, when he had cancer. Steve told Guru Dan in the letter to please continue to pursue teaching and how JKD needs you and this is what Bruce would want for you. It was a letter of encouragement for Guru Dan to keep on teaching.
After Bruce Lee died, Guru Dan did'nt feel like teaching any more. He was despondent and had never felt so bad. It was so difficult to lose such a close friend and never a day goes by without thinking of him. He remembers crying all the way from Seattle to Sacramento. He spoke with Larry Hartsell and they both said that a day never passed without thinking of Bruce in some way. It was a huge loss.
Diana remembers her mom not wanting her to be the first one to tell her dad that Uncle Bruce had passed away. She recalls her parents speaking in the bedroom behind closed doors and then her father running to the phone and start calling people trying to get verification that the news was accurate and real. It was the first time she saw her father cry which is upsetting for any child. And upset she wasnt allowed to go to the funeral.
