rare and original Bruce Lee student, Jerry Poteet is known as "The conscience of Jeet Kune Do." And no less than the editor of Inside Kung fu magazine has called him, "Unquestionably the greatest Jeet Kune Do Instructor in the world." Since his teacher's premature passing, Jerry has stood firm, refusing to water down the art that had such an enormous impact in his life. In fact, Jerry credits his teacher, Bruce Lee, with giving him the tools to survive, "the fight of my life", when he was compelled to undergo a liver transplant in 1995. Today, Jerry teaches Jeet Kune Do to the next generation of students and Instructors, who will keep the flame alive. Sifu Poteet has been teaching martial arts for over 40 years . Like many young men in the 60s, Jerry began his martial arts career in Kenpo, and became a black belt under renowned Kenpo Instructor Ed Parker. But, contrary to popular misconception, Jerry did not meet his famous Jeet Kune Do teacher in Los Angeles, but in Oakland, at James Lee's house. Later that year, he was fortunate enough to be chosen as the second student admitted to Bruce Lee's Chinatown School back in LA. He was also selected to be in a "closed door" group of five students, who trained with Bruce Lee twice a week. In the years since, Jerry has used his martial arts expertise to train the Dallas Cowboys football team, executive bodyguard Hollywood celebrities, and choreograph the fight choreography of several motion pictures. But his proudest achievement is the fact that he was chosen as the person best able to train the actor who would portray his teacher, Bruce Lee. Over the years, Jerry has refined a teaching method that, like the art of Jeet Kune Do itself, strips away the inessentials. It was this method he used to train actor Jason Scott Lee for the role in DRAGON, THE BRUCE LEE STORY. For Sifu Poteet, it was the ultimate way "To give something back to my teacher." Jerry truly embodies the principle of Yin/Yang, or opposites co-existing harmoniously. Whether teaching an individual or a group, Sifu Poteet is easy-going, yet intense. He is friendly and casual in manner, yet he demands precision in movement and attitude. Laughing and joking, yet all business when it comes to the training results. He wishes to elicit from students only what his teacher demanded from him; their best. It is amazing to see how many surpass not only his expectations, but their own as well. This is why Jerry Poteet is proclaimed as "The Source" for the truth in the art of Jeet Kune Do. A rare and original Bruce Lee student, Jerry Poteet is known as "The conscience of Jeet Kune Do." And no less than the editor of Inside Kung fu magazine has called him, "Unquestionably the greatest Jeet Kune Do Instructor in the world." Since his teacher's premature passing, Jerry has stood firm, refusing to water down the art that had such an enormous impact in his life.

1/24/2012 10:38:30 AM | My love and prayers to Fran, Sifu"s family and students. When the Torrance Academy originally opened the women"s class was separate from the men then when they consolidated the rooms to one large room I was the only female who stayed, Sifu Jerry took me under his wing and he would put me with certain students and tell me what there weak areas were and have me trip them up and he thought that was hilarious, he would say they needed a macho check (literary). He said it was sweet coming from a women. He was always feeding me his awesome energy and checking mine out and teaching me economy of motion. He gave me many beautiful Kali sticks designed for me and I still have them. I have missed him for many years and my only regret is that I did not keep in touch. He held a special place in my heart and always will.

1/22/2012 10:55:14 AM |  I would like to extend my condolences to Sifu Fran, all of Sifu Jerry"s family, the JPJKD Instructors, students and everyone whose lives he touched and forever changed. Though my journey with Sifu Jerry just began I"m a better person and Martial Artist because of it. I only knew him for just over two years and even though my time with him was brief I"ll cherish it for the rest of my life. He was the only teacher I"ve ever had that could teach a technique with few words and a quick demonstration and have it become a part of you. We miss you Sifu and you better believe we will KEEP THE FLAME BURNING BRIGHT!! Thank You For Everything!! We Love You!!!

1/22/2012 10:54:22 AM | All my life I had wanted to me one of Bruce Lee"s students and train with them. But I figured I was dreaming so I let that idea go. Years later I find myself eyeball to eyeball with Sifu Jerry in his home, being video taped with him explaining a trapping sequence. I was terrified and did my best to have a placid face. Sifu Jerry was just as friendly as could be.(Although can I say, very meticulous about that trapping sequence. :) Thank you Sifu Jerry for blessing us all your gift and insight. Your teachings have had a profound effect on my life. Thank you, Sifu Jerry.

1/17/2012 3:52:33 PM | It struck me by surprise this sad news. I had the pleasure to meet sifu Jerry twice and i cherish what he has shared with me. My thoughts are with Fran, his family and his top students. Keep the flame burning as he wanted. He lived a long life because of Bruce Lee. May we have the same wonderful life of sharing this beautiful art of JKD in a manner that is acceptable toward Jerry"s standards wich is a reflection of his mentor. RIP sifu. 1/17/2012 2:52:51 PM | I was very close to Sifu Jerry. Fran teaches at our school and we"ve been blessed to have had continuous contact with both of them for many years. Sifu Jerry truly walked his talk. His was one of the most simple, understated, yet profound teachers I"ve ever had. My wife and I will deeply miss him, but keep his spirit alive every time we step on the floor. A very good friend of mine and teacher at our Taoist temple, Derek Lin sent an email to me earlier this week. I"d like to share his closing observation: "Sifu Poteet will be sorely missed. He was one of a kind, a singular presence who inspired me. The entire martial arts community has suffered a great loss, but we can take comfort in knowing that, like Sigong Bruce Lee, he has returned to the great Tao."

1/17/2012 1:46:51 PM | Dear Jerry, I feel such enormous loss. Sifu, you were such a terrific person. It was priceless to see you showing me an incredible fighting sequence and then you"d go over and start playing with Sweetie (the dog) like she was a 5 year old child. Precious moments. Sifu, you dedicated so much time to enlightened me and you assured that I understood the purpose and nuances of the positioning of every part of my body. I can only hope that we can keep the flame alive. It"s going to have to take all of us, because no one person can do it. That"s just how monumental your contribution was and will continue to be to this world. You played, but you played seriously. I"m resolved to keep learning and growing. I"m a better person (not simply a better artist), because of you Jerry. I"ll miss you always, Sifu. I love you.
