John Leroux's World KarateFIT Centre started at the Ottawa Athletic Club in 1997 and moved to its current location with about 200 TaeBo and KarateFIT students and 50 Karate students in January 2000.
Although we had lots of fitness students the school had a difficult time making ends meet in the very first summer. I borrowed some money from my Mom to pay Septembers rent. That year I learned to be much more proactive during the summer months. Working camps worked to bring in a little extra income in the summer months and also made for a full house to start September with the everyone Back to school.
Currently our Dojo runs Traditional Karate, Krav Maga and KarateFIT in a facility of about 4,900 square feet. We have 3 full-time staff, 8 or so part-time staff and a very helpful SWAT and CIT team. Sensei Nathalie (my wife) is our Program Director, keeps the books and continues to teach as well because of popular demand. Sensei Joseph Moulton just graded with honors to his Sandan grading. He has always been one of my best students in support, attitude and skill. He has become a fantastic instructor a Sensei. He cares about the students and he always gives them his best. As for me, I focus on the teaching at every level from Kinder to Instructors, work on promoting the martial arts in the community as much more than a sport or recreational activity, planning interesting classes and curriculum and have fun. When it gets crazy I'm reminded by Kyoshi Dave Kovar when you're at the end of your rope tie a big knot and hang on
We have a wonderful Dojo with a tough love culture. We are expected to teach our very best and we expect our student to push hard and develop skills where they feel that sense of accomplishment that comes with overcoming adversity and winning the rank they are awarded. In fact, when a student starts here they are provided with a uniform but no belt. They must earn their very first rank.
The idea of being an ivy league karate school with a philosophy of providing the roots and the wings and that a child is not a vessel to be filled but a lamp to be lite. We believe that there are many aspects to a well-rounded martial artist and that for the wheel to roll properly the spokes need be equal distance. So, we like to train strikes, seizing and locking, takedowns, groundwork, timing, strength, coordination, flexibility and self-reflection.
I would say 80% of our students train in our karate program and we have a following of Krav Maga and martial art fitness classes. Krav Maga and the fitness classes are also used to build value in our Leadership and CIT Mastery Programs. The fitness classes provide a great way for our students to prepare for the challenge of the Shodan Ho or any dan grading the that matter.
