There is no don"t about it, running a martial arts school can be hard work. A school owner has to wear lots of hats. At times, we have to be a psychologist, a salesman, a motivator, a teacher, the boss, and the janitor. But with that said, I"m not sure what could be more rewarding. We have a chance to impact people"s lives every day, for the better. I don"t know about you, but sometimes, when the going gets tuff, I find this easy to forget.
My office is located upstairs at our headquarters school. Our main school is quite large. It has three giant floors for training and and I am extremely proud of it. As a matter of fact, when my brother Tim and I first moved in, I couldn"t sleep for a week I was so excited about this location . I have to admit that after being there for 24 years, if I am not careful, I tend to take it for granted. Here is how I combat that.
A couple of years back, I developed a daily ritual that helps me remember what my job is all about and how lucky I am to do what I do. Every morning, when I first show up at the school, I try to remember what it felt like the very first time I walked in. I wander from room to room just admiring and appreciating the building that we have and all the great experiences that myself and hundreds of students have had in this place.
Next, I open my office door, sit down at my desk and take a few moments to remember how lucky I am to do what I love to do. Sure, there are challenges and of course it"s not always easy, but what is? I have found that starting each morning with this ritual has completely transformed my day. Ah, Gratitude.....I don"t know about you but it always brings out my best. Now that we are on the subject, how do you start your day? Do you let chance control your mood or do you have a ritual that helps to direct it?
